Why DIY HVAC Repairs Can Do More Harm Than Good

Should You Use a Ceiling Fan with Your Air Conditioner?
August 18, 2025Heading out of town soon? Before you grab your suitcase and hit the road, don’t forget to prep your HVAC system. A few simple steps can help you save energy, avoid problems, and come home to a comfortable house.
Here’s what we recommend:
1. Adjust the Thermostat
There’s no need to keep your home at the same temperature while you’re gone. In the Arizona heat, we usually recommend setting your thermostat between 78-84°F if you’re leaving for several days. That keeps things from getting too hot inside, but saves energy by not cooling an empty home. In the winters, do the opposite and limit your heating.
If you have a smart thermostat, even better—you can monitor and adjust it from anywhere. As you travel back, you can turn the thermostat back to your preferred temperature and arrive home to a comfortable house.
2. Replace the Air Filter (If It’s Time)
If your air filter is due for a change, do it before you leave. A clean filter helps your system run efficiently while you’re away and avoids airflow problems that could strain your system over time.
3. Check for Obvious Issues
Take a minute to look over your outdoor unit. Clear away any leaves or debris, and make sure nothing’s blocking airflow. If something seems off, now’s the time to call a pro—not when you’re thousands of miles away.
4. Close the Blinds or Curtains
Blocking out direct sunlight helps keep your home cooler naturally. Less sunlight means less work for your A/C while you’re away.
5. Consider a Surge Protector
In Arizona, summer storms and power surges aren’t uncommon. A whole house surge protector can help protect your system (and other major appliances) from unexpected damage while you’re out of town.
Bonus Tip: Have a Friend Check In
It’s always a good idea to have someone stop by your house if you’re gone for a while—just to make sure everything’s running smoothly.
