Dehumidifiers vs. Humidifiers: What’s Right for Arizona Homes?
September 2, 2025If you’re running your air conditioner and wondering whether your ceiling fan is helping or hurting, you’re not alone. It’s a common question—and the good news is, they actually work better together than apart.
Using a Ceiling Fan with Your Air Conditioner
Ceiling fans don’t lower the temperature in a room, but they do help circulate the cool air your air conditioner is already producing. That movement creates a wind-chill effect that helps your body feel cooler, even if the thermostat stays the same.
By using both at once, you can:
- Help your A/C cool rooms faster
- Maintain more consistent temperatures in your home
- Raise the thermostat a couple degrees without sacrificing comfort
- Potentially lower energy bills in the long run
In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that using a ceiling fan allows you to increase your thermostat setting by about 4°F with no reduction in comfort—potentially saving up to 10% annually on cooling costs.
Just make sure your fan is spinning in the right direction—counterclockwise in the summer—to push air down and create that cooling breeze.
And remember to turn off the fan when you leave the room—ceiling fans cool people, not spaces.
Choosing and Installing a Ceiling Fan
If you’re considering upgrading your fan, look for Energy Star-certified models, which are more efficient than standard fans. Modern ceiling fans also come with smart features like remote controls, adjustable speeds, and reversible motors for year-round use.
Popular brands include Hunter, Casablanca, and Minka-Aire, and you can find a variety of styles at major home improvement stores or online retailers.
When installing a ceiling fan, make sure to:
- Mount it at least 7 feet from the floor
- Keep blades 8–10 inches from the ceiling
- Center it in the room for optimal airflow
So yes, your ceiling fan is a smart complement to your A/C. Use them together, and your home (and energy bill) will feel the difference.
